Defying social convention in 1960, Laura marries before finishing high school. After graduation, she sets out to fulfill her dreams and discovers the depths and challenges of love, honor and treachery. She joins her husband, a navy seaman, and begins sailing the course of her life.

Laura’s journey into womanhood propels her into the company of military families and personnel representing the poor and the privileged, adversity and chaos. Living in a trailer park in shantytown next to a military base, she is subjected to the rawness that encircles her and her family and struggles to conquer its adversities while finding humor and love in its lighter side.

North meets South and cultural differences clash. Surrounded in a maelstrom of hardship mixed with joy, Laura’s naiveté fades against startling encounters in navy and civilian countercultures.

Her moral upbringing is challenged when a mob member offers to eliminate a cruel member of her family to protect her children. Will she be driven to murder?

Found this woman's romance book an enjoyable and good read. Once you started to read, you could not put it down. Pleasantly surprised with descriptions of my hometown's "hang outs" and businesses...brought back many memories of my own youth. Looking forward to another of her books.

Thief of Innocence edition by Luanne White Romance eBooks Reviews

Yes Tempestuous, Titillating, and tumultuous saga was what I love to read. That being said, I also was a wife of a military man in Pananma City around the same time. All that I read was too familiar to me and I fell into the book like falling into a historic well. Laura was like so many of us Naive and full of promise and hope for the perfect future. A future that was never to be. She was like a personification of a lot of feelings that I had during the same period. I am sure there are others. Let me say that I walked in Laura's footsteps and for some reason felt the way I felt way back then. Laura is a Pseudo-name for a lot of us in that park. I can see it and I can feel it and I only know that I can't wait to find out what Laura has in store in the next book. She is too much like the many and I know that the sequel will bring a bunch of us back together. It would not surprise me if those in my park wouldn't beg the same question. Where are we going now? What is to happen to Laura and the children? I am super anxious to read more.
It interested me right away because I am a military spouse. Laura as a very young high school bride had many difficult issues to deal with let alone being introduced to the navy culture. Then moving from the north to the south she discovered she was more naive than she ever thought she was. In typical southern fashion, neighbors became her friends when she needed them and thank goodness. Her dream of the perfect family life was not to be despite the author's clever way she described the intimate times between Laura and her spouse which left nothing to the imagination! Steamy! The new author also intertwined different characters in Laura's life-sometimes good, sometimes not good for that unattainable perfect future. I recommend this book for a quick light read with many twists and turns to keep you guessing about how Laura's life eventually shapes up.
Luanne white has captured the life of a young girl growing up in the sixties before the struggle for women's rights matured. Product of a broken home, sibling by five years to her sister, Laura Krause marries in her senior year of high school to escape her scattered world in Toledo, Ohio. Life, as the wife of a navy corpsman in Jacksonville, Florida and living in an off-base trailer park, isn't easy in those early days of the Vietnam war, but it is stable and an adventure which is enriched by her child of two children. Ms. White captures the details of a woman's struggle in trailer park environment during wartime, against a society that has little sympathy for those who haven't learned how the game is played. Her mother never told her.

Thief of Innocence is a work of fiction, but Ms. White's detailed descriptions have an authentic ring as the reader learns with Laura the coping skills that young military wives needed to make a home in those turbulent days.
The story is not for women alone, and the male reader will note with fascination the transition of social liberation in the sixties and seventies. As the ugly end of an ugly war approaches, so the heroine experiences the ultimate betrayal, and by way of Atlanta, Georgia, returns home to begin again. Set with the backdrop of Toledo, Ohio, and the prohibition era character, which that colorful city possesses, the reader watches a single woman, head of household, fight against an all-too-slowly fading male dominated world.

Young adults, men and women, will find that life for the single mother fifty years ago is in stark contrast with the single woman today--a testimony to the advance of women's rights. Thank you, Ms. White.
Thief of Innocence is a fast read with a compelling story line and an added touch to remind us of how far we Americans have come.
I loved this book. It was very hard to put it down. The character development was great. Hard to believe it was a first novel. I can't wait for the sequel.
