The Longest Journey can be difficult to get into, but is worth the effort. Set at the end of the Victorian period in England, it follows the character of Rickie Elliot from his Cambridge days through various attempts to find happiness and fulfillment in life. It helps to know a little about British society to fully understand each character's actions. The fascinating thing about the novel is that there isn't a single character that you can pinpoint as good or bad -- like real people, the characters lie and put on false fronts. It's fun to discover just who Rickie's friends and relatives really are. Characters like Agnes, who Rickie loves, and Mrs. Failing, his relative, make some great points about women in society. Although this book is primarily a "novel of manners" like Jane Austen would write, there are several exciting plot twists, including a surprise ending. If you enjoy books by authors like Jane Austen and Thomas Hardy, try The Longest Journey.

Forster at his best!

All Forster books are well written and this is no exception. Not the most exciting story line I've read but definitely worth your time.
Here is another book that I had heard or read about long ago and conveniently downloaded and was disappointed. Maybe it is the oppressively British setting that makes it less than general in meaning or the unlikely characters, but I just did not get it. It reminds me of the novels of ford Madox Ford, where I never know what is happening.
This review refers only to the formatting of the LeClue22 edition for (B0013QUKIW). It appears to have been prepared from a text file containing a hard return at the end of every line. When the publisher fails to remove the excess hard returns, the text doesn't wrap properly every other line on the screen is a half line. Although LeClue22's price is currently the lowest for this work (which is in the public domain in the US), I wish I'd known about the formatting shortcomings. For a better edition, try EbooksLib (B000FC2OWK), at least until LeClue22 gets its act together.
version format is almost unreadable due to line breaks in the wrong places every other line. A pity.
Not Forster's best, but still well written and complex. If you're new to E.M. Forster, this should be one of the last of his novels you pick up. Try Passage to India, Howard's End, Room with a View, or Maurice.
